Fishing trawler capsizes off Calangute, crew safe

CALANGUTE: Ten crew members of a fishing boat had a miraculous escape when the fishing vessel capsized off Calangute shores late Friday evening, due to high velocity winds.

The crew somehow managed to reach the shores safely but were traumatised.
The owners of the fishing vessel, a high profile politician from Vasco and his relatives,  however suffered huge losses as three motors were lost in the water, while the vessel was also damaged badly.
The cost of each machine is estimated to be between Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh, besides the vessel was damaged beyond repair. The estimated loss suffered by the owner from Vasco could be around Rs 10 lakh. The fishing nets were floating in the waters while another vessel rushed to pull out the nets, early Saturday morning.
According to sources, the fishing vessel touched the shores of Calangute at around 8.30 pm. The fishermen who were working at the shore, saw the vessel but within minutes it was gone.  The vessel allegedly capsized due to high velocity winds and weight of fish, throwing the crew and everything including the motors, fishing nets and the fish into the water. Two of the members were totally exhausted and were provided required aid by the local fishing community, who rescued them and removed the fishing nets from the waters.
“I saw a fishing vessel in the Calangute waters at around 8.30 pm. But soon thereafter I could not see any vessel. I assumed that it capsized due to underwater currents and waves.  It was also windy and controlling a vessel would have been extremely difficult at that point of time.  Luckily for the crew, all survived though a few were completely exhausted” fisherman Inacio narrated.
