Canacona: A trawler whose crew had cast the his net off the coast of Agonda beach strayed close to the shore, resulting in it being grounded.
Ferdinado Fernades an activist from Agonda speaking to this correspondent said that when he was taking a stroll on the Agonda beach he saw a fishing trawler casting his net close to the sea shore.
After the net was cast the helmsman unable to negotiate the currents and drifted eventually grounding his vessel.
Lucky for the trawler crew the turn of high tide saved them from a major disaster Fernandes said.
“How and who is allowing these trawlers to come so close to the beach and that too at the reserved turtle nesting site? questioned Mr. Fernandes.
Distress calls were made to the marine police station and to other authorities but before any help could arrive the helsman with a help of life guards at the beach taking advantage of the rising high tide took succeded in freeing the grounded vessel said Fernandes.
