PANJIM: Five Corporation of City of Panaji workers were arrested for hindering CCP from collecting garbage as few workers returned to their cleaning duties on Friday.
Sunil Talwar(40), Pundalik Pujari (55), Hanuman Talwar (55) all from Tonca, Uday Ambekar (55) from Campal and Ramakant Rosario (46) from Panjim were arrested after a complaint was filed by commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues that they did not join work and instead blocked municipality vehicles and created a nuisance on the road.
They were arrested under Sections 341, 353, 143, 149 of IPC and will be produced before court for remand on Saturday.
After parleys some CCP workers are said to have begun collection of garbage late last tonight while a majority stuck to their stand.
A meeting was held Friday after which a decision was taken with CCP sources indicating that the strike could fizzle out or ESMA could be put into forces as garbage collects in the city.
CCP workers were threatened to go on a strike after four of the workers working with the city traffic cell were asked to work at the sorting station near the animal shelter at St Inez.
On Thursday, the CCP, told media they were thinking of outsourcing the entire city cleaning work, including road sweeping and garbage collection and shifting all the workers to the Bainguinim site.
