PANJIM: The selection committee for vice-chancellor of Goa University has recommended the names of five academicians for the post. The list has been submitted to State Governor and GU Chancellor PS Sreedharan Pillai for the final selection.
Sources said that the committee has sent a sealed confidential list with the names they have shortlisted. “Chancellor is expected to finalise the name of new VC this week,” sources said, adding that the appointment will be for a period of five years or till completion of 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.
Sources said that if the Chancellor does not approve any of the recommended names, he can call for fresh recommendations from the same applications.
Sources also said that, if needed the Chancellor may consult the State Education Minister before finalising the name.
The applications for the post of VC were invited by the Governor’s office in June and 260 candidates had applied of which 23 were called for the final interview. The list included two senior professors from the varsity – Marine Science Department dean Harilal B Menon and senior professor from the Botany Department Bernard Rodrigues.
Currently Prof Malapati K Janarthanam, of the Department of Botany, is officiating as Vice Chancellor, after the term of Varun Sahni ended on August 18.
The three-member selection committee included CSIR director general Dr Shekhar Mande, former NCERT director Jagmohan Singh Rajput and DRDO’s Director Satish Reddy.
