Enforcement officials of the Legal Metrology on Monday cracked down on ‘cake and pastry’ outlets across the State and found them cheating customers by selling less than the declared quantity.
The raid was following a complaint by a customer whose name was not disclosed to the media.
Controller N M Naik said that the manufacturers included weight of the cardboard base on which the cakes and pastries are placed while serving to the customers.
“They sold it in less quantity than the actual. This is against the Metrology Rules. We found that Black Forest and other cakes at a price ranging from Rs 370 to Rs 550 per kg were being sold by 75 gm to 160 gm less per kg,” he said.
The department has booked five shop owners for exhibiting and delivering less quantity food products than the declared quantity.
The enforcement officials have asked the consumers to pay only the net weight of cakes and pastries and not for the cardboard base.
“We want to bring it to the knowledge of all consumers and general public that net weight of the cakes and pastries is not inclusive of the weight of the cardboard base but the price which the consumers are paying is only for the net weight of the cake,” Naik said.
The officials have warned the manufacturers and retail shop owners to declare the actual net weight of cakes and other pastry items.
