MARGAO: Five different proposals to give a face-lift to Lohia Maidan, Margao, were placed before the stakeholders on Thursday at a meeting chaired by the TCP Minister and District Collector. The work of the redesigning of the historic maidan will be undertaken by GSUDA. The proposal to change the look of the MMC building by painting it back to its original form and also to improve the aesthetics has also been approved by various stakeholders.
TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai, MMC Chairperson Babita Angle, Convener of Marg and Freedom Fighter Gurunath Kelekar, President of 18th June Kranti Din Samiti Avinash Shirodker, Margao MLA Digamber Kamat, Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao, District Collector Anjali Sehrawat, Architect Pritesh Bafna from the Consultancy and others were present at the meeting.
The plan is to make architectural changes into the Maidan to make it more user-friendly so that all the classes of the society from students, senior citizens, tourists and others can use it for everyday. “This is the only available place for public meetings and we plan to keep its importance that way,” Sardesai said.
A design will be given by the consultant architect to the stakeholders and after the approval of the freedom fighters and MLAs concerned, the same would be sent to the MMC and after MMC resolution it would be sent to the GSUDA for execution.
The plan to change the colour of the historic municipal council building has also been placed which has been long overdue for restoration of the long standing glory of the structure. Aesthetics of the MMC building would be tweaked to get back its old glorious image.
Freedom fighter Gurunath Kelekar said that they have liked the plan presented at the meeting. He said that he was happy with the plan and the fact that there is effort being made to arrest the easy entry to the maidan. Kelekar has demanded that the provision for urinals be made at right place for the people coming to the maidan.
