Five Salcete villages say no to coal hub

Village panchayats of Dramapur-Sirlim, Aquem Baixo, Varca, Cana Benaulim and Rachol also object to the inclusion of six Goan rivers in the schedule of national waterways

MARGAO: All five villages in Salcete that had their gram sabha meetings on Sunday unanimously adopted the two resolutions opposing developing Goa as a coal hub and inclusion of the six Goan rivers in the schedule of national waterways even though some of the panchayats had adopted similar resolutions earlier.
The five villages where the resolutions were adopted are Dramapur Sirlim, Aquem Baixo, Varca, Cana Benaulim and Rachol. Incidentally, Dramapur Sirlim and Varca panchayats had objected to the inclusion of 6 Goan rivers in the schedule of national waterways at the previous gram sabhas but adopted it again today.
At the gram sabha held in Rachol,  Diana had to explain in detail the issues regarding these two topics.
And it was only after her explanation on the topic that the villagers in a loud voice adopted the resolutions even vowing to agitate over them if necessary.
The villagers were particularly irked with the national waterways issue as part of the Rachol village is an island.
