PANJIM: The security of the flying squads for the Panjim Assembly by-polls has been upgraded after an officer from one of the squads was threatened by party supporters in St Inez in the capital.
Senior Police official informed that for the Panjim by-polls two flying squads have been formed. Each of the flying squad vehicles earlier consisted of a policeman from Goa Police.
However, after the incident last week wherein a flying squad official was threatened while executing his duty, The North Goa Collector has instructed for providing additional police personnel on these vehicles.
Accordingly, each of the flying squad vehicles will now have four armed personnel from the Central Para Military Forces (CPMF). Additional CPMF will also be deployed at the static surveillance teams across the city, which comes under the Panjim constituency.
The attack incident occurred on last Friday over alleged removal of Congress party’s flags.
Panjim police had arrested Mahendra Dharwatkar (56) and Adil Shaikh (34) on charges of allegedly threatening an officer of a flying squad and violating the model code of conduct at St Inez. Both were later released on conditional bail.
