Following plaints from merchants, MMC conducts inspection of market

MAPUSA: A joint inspection of the Mapusa Municipal Market was undertaken by officials of the Mapusa Municipal Council and Fire Services following a memorandum submitted to the Chairperson by the Mapusa Merchants with the issues plaguing the market.

The Merchants stated that access to the market was blocked as the vendors had encroached in every nook and corner as a result of which there no way even for an ambulance to enter.

Chairperson Priya Mishal said, “The Mapusa Merchants Association had submitted a memorandum with their grievances and had requested for inspection of the market. The blocking of entry and exit points of market, toilets, non functioning lights, potholes were some issues placed before the officials. We will discuss the grievances at the council meetings and take necessary action,” Chairperson said.

The Merchants pointed out that the vendors had encroached all over and blocked the entry and  exit gates hampering the movement of Emergency vehicles to the market enter.  They stated that recently a woman needed medical help but the ambulance could not enter the market as there was no access.

“These issues were highlighted on several occasions and have not reached to any logical conclusion till date. Until the vending zones are created  the issue will not be resolved. The entrance and exits need to be cleared too,” the Merchants said.

Meanwhile, Mapusa Fire Station Incharge Krishna Parrikar said, “During the inspection, we found that one of the five fire hydrant points in the market was not functioning at all while the others were partly working and hence the matter was referred to the PWD for action”.

“At least 4-metre access is required for vehicles to enter the market in case of an emergency and with the vendors encroaching even in open spaces and people parking haphazardly, it is just impossible to enter the place. I have brought these points to the notice of the inspection team and the Chairperson has assured us to take necessary steps,” said Parrikar.
