For tax-paying Tuemkars, water is ‘gifted’ every other day

For years, taps in Tuem run dry each alternate day, in a village that officially ‘boasts’ of the upcoming Electronic City

TUEM: It’s been several years since tax-paying Tuemkars have been getting the service of water every alternate day. And no one has cared to come and tell them why and by when will they get what they deserve, a running water supply each day.

In a twist to the government promise, Tuemkars get if they are lucky- har ghar, alternate day jal. But that too a trickle and for some time. And this is a village where the State-of-the-art Electronic City is coming up. Look at the irony.

Irked over the issue, the locals led by panchayat members, on Monday met the officer at the Water Resources Department (WRD), Pernem section with their grievances seeking an immediate solution to the problem.

The residents expressed frustration over the fact that despite having two water tanks, which are supposed to supply water for at least half an hour daily, there is no water supply.

They said despite the rain, there is no proper water available for drinking.

The residents urged the department to rectify the technical issues and ensure a regular supply of water.

Deputy Sarpanch Nilesh Kandolkar said, “The lack of access to water affects the daily lives, hygiene and overall well-being of the residents. There are two water tanks in the Tuem village but due to technical reasons, the water is not supplied to the people. There is a misunderstanding among the residents of Varchawada and Khalchawada in Tuem who feel that water is being diverted and vice versa.”

“We get water for one-and-half hours on alternate days so in case if someone fails to collect water in between then there is no water for the next days together.  We request the authorities to rectify the issue and supply water daily for at least three hours”, Kandolkar demanded.

The locals further pointed out that the number of operators in these particular areas has reduced from three to one. Every now and then, the lone pump which is used round-the-clock breaks down due to overheating. There is a need to install at least two pumps so that both can be used for specific hours to avoid overheating, the locals urged.

The panchas pointed out that people are left to suffer as water doesn’t reach them because of mismanagement by the department concerned.
