For the second time in four days, garbage dumped near Margao’s KTC bus stand catches fire

MARGAO: There was yet another fire in the open area near Margao’s KTC bus stand, which has turned into a garbage dumping site. It was this garbage that caught on fire and the Margao Fire Brigade had to rush to the site on Tuesday afternoon to douse it.

Even after using water on the fire, there was still smoke coming from the dumped garbage. The fire brigade staff said they need to dump a lot of mud over the garbage to completely smother the fire.

While the cause of the fire is not yet known, there have been instances in Sonsoddo and Vasco, where dumped garbage has caught fire in the hot summer.

However, the fire brigade staff said there was a possibility that someone had deliberately set fire to the garbage as this was the second time in a span of less than four days that this same spot had caught fire.

There have also been concerns raised by local residents about the foul stench emanating from the piles of garbage. There were also complaints about the landfilling activity wherein recycled waste from Sonsoddo had been dumped here in the past.
