PERNEM: Eugen, 33, a foreign tourist was injured after a dead casuarina tree came crashing down on his motorcycle at the Keri Beach on Saturday.
The incident occurred at around 12.10 pm when all of a sudden the tree collapsed on the bike on which the tourist was sitting and damaged it beyond repair. The victim however had a narrow escape but sustained some fractures in the bargain.
The locals immediately contacted the Pernem fire and police station personnel who rushed to the spot and with help of lifeguards rescued the injured man. He was later shifted to the District Hospital at Mapusa.
Keri’s former deputy sarpanch Raghoba Talkar said, “Most of the casuarina trees, which once upon a time were the beauty of the beach, are dead and now pose danger to the people moving in this area. They collapse at any time. We request the government to take steps to clear the dead trees to avoid such incidents in the future,” Talkar said.
