Forest department cracks whip on destruction of sand dunes at Morjim

Vishwajit Rane as TCP Minister directs Department to issue stop work order, revoke permissions granted

PANJIM: The Forest Department on Monday took action against the alleged destruction of sand dunes and illegal tree cutting at Madlawada, Morjim.

Forest Minister Vishwajit Rane said that the department had come across a complaint with regards to the destruction of sand dunes and illegal tree felling in Survey No 123/1 at Madlawada, Morjim.

“More than 30 trees were felled illegally,” he said.

Rane said that an FIR has been filed against the individual involved. He said that the proposed area is close to the turtle nesting and conservation site. “The action amounts to disturbance and violation of Forest Conservation Act,” he said.

Rane, who is also Minister for TCP, has directed the department to issue a stop work order and revoke any permissions granted.

“Protection and conservation of the environment is a significant and pressing area of concern to us. Anyone who violates the law will face severe consequences,” he said.
