MARGAO: Alleging that Formalin-laced fish is being sold in Goa, TMC Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Luizinho Faleiro on Tuesday said the “merchants of evil, greed and death are killing Goans” by “lacing” the fish with formalin.
He has demanded the Union government to take strict action against the fish mafia immediately.
Expressing concern for the Goans, he raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. But since the House was adjourned, he stood in front of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and gave a clarion call to the people to remain alert of “Formalin mafia”.
Faleiro also raised questions pertaining to the proposed State-of-the-art laboratory to test the fish for Formalin in Goa, which is yet to see the light of the day.
Herald too, had raised this issue wherein a huge quantity of fish entering the State by Railways goes unchecked for Formalin and being sold in the open market.
It has been revealed that unchecked and unhygienic transportation of fish from the neighbouring States continues to plague the Margao Railway Station.
“Fish curry and rice is the staple food of Goans. Goa has long coastline. In Goa nearly 200,000 metric tonnes of fish is caught annually,” said Faleiro.
He further stated that 90 per cent of fish caught is sent out and hardly 10 per cent reaches the consumers in Goa.
“At the same time nearly 200 fish truckloads come into Goa from outside, laced with Formalin and the scourge of cancer in killing Goans. The Central and the State governments had promised to put up a State-of-art laboratory in Goa. Shockingly, today these merchants of greed, evil and death; the fish mafia are killing Goans,” he said.
