PANJIM: Former Additional Solicitor General of India and former Advocate General of Goa, Adv Manohar Sinai Usgaonkar died on Friday. He was 96.
Adv Usgaonkar was a prominent senior lawyer and was well versed with Portuguese laws. ‘The Marvel’, a book authored by late Adv Usgaonkar was one among the several books that have been written by him during his long and illustrious legal career.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and many prominent lawyers have condoled the death of Adv Usgaonkar and paid rich tributes to the legal luminary.
Sawant said, “Saddened by the demise of senior Adv Manohar Sinai Usgaonkar, former ASG of India & Former AG of Goa. His passing away is a great loss for the entire legal fraternity. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family.”
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao said, “Saddened by the passing away of former Additional Solicitor General of India & former Advocate General of Goa, Senior Advocate Manohar Bab Sinai Usgaonkar. Goa has lost a bright legal luminary & genius of law. My condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
Former MP and Adv Narendra Sawaikar said, “Saddened by the passing away of former AG of Goa & ASG of India Sr Advocate M S Usgaonkar. He will always be remembered for his contribution to the Goan legal field. My deepest condolences to his family members and relatives. May his soul attain Sadgati.”
Former Bombay High Court Judge Justice A P Lawande said, “In the death of Adv MS Usgaonkar, we have truly lost a legend and a person who was an institution by himself. I was fortunate to practice along with him in 1975, to have him argue before me when I became a judge and also to oppose him. It was a pleasure to hear him as a lawyer. He had a lot patience and never lost his temper and argued to the point. His loss cannot be compensated.”
Adv V M Patkar said, “Senior Adv M S Usgaonkar took pains to study matters, was devoted and worked with a missionary spirit. He was good to everybody. He contributed lots to the legal fraternity. He also translated a lot of Portuguese laws. Senior Adv M S Usgaonkar was a thorough gentleman advocate.”
Shridhar Assoldekar said, “Senior Adv M S Usgaonkar was a good man and a pundit of law. He was a professional on Indo-Portuguese law, civil property matter and devasthan law. His death is a big loss to the legal profession. He trained many lawyers under him. Adv Usgaonkar was always soft spoken and to the point. He gave his 100% to every case. May his soul rest in peace.”
Adv Shivaji Desai said, “Adv M S Usgaonkar who was former additional solicitor general of India and Advocate General of Goa had good knowledge of Portuguese law and translated and published many books. He guided young lawyers and gave them valuable advise. His arguments in the court led to many good judgments. May his soul rest in peace”
