Former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider granting dual citizenship to Goans, drawing attention to the precedent set by Puducherry. Faleiro emphasised the significance of this issue, citing his interactions with the Goan diaspora during his travels around the world. According to him, Goans living abroad have a strong connection to their homeland and seek dual citizenship to preserve their roots.
Faleiro has been advocating for dual citizenship since 1991, reaching out to successive Prime Ministers on the matter. He underscored that those seeking Portuguese citizenship are not intending to relocate but are pursuing global employment opportunities. Faleiro asserted that distance from Goa does not diminish their Goan identity, emphasising the need to safeguard their ties to the state.
Highlighting Goans’ historical support for the central government, Faleiro expressed optimism about the BJP’s role in both the state and centre, anticipating the Prime Minister’s approval for dual citizenship. He pointed out the potential economic benefits for Goa, citing foreign exchange if dual citizenship is granted to Goans residing outside the state. Faleiro views this as a win-win situation for all parties involved.
