Former MMC chairperson stabbed for ‘not helping accused in getting a job’

VASCO: Former chairperson of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Rama Honnavarkar (66) was stabbed by a resident of Headland Sada on Saturday morning.
Police identified the accused is as one Nilesh Honavarkar. Police said that the over some previous enmity, accused Nilesh stabbed Rama Honnavarkar with kitchen knife near Headland Sada junction at around 9.15 am. The locals immediately rushed to help the victim and took him to Cottage hospital at Chicalim from where he was referred to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bamboim where he is presently undergoing treatment and his condition is reportedly critical.
“As per our preliminary investigation, the accused Nilesh who is currently working as an assistant line helper in the electricity department was upset with Rama for not helping him in getting employment in the past. Thus in anger, the accused had even abused Rama with filthy words on several occasions. Even last month a complaint was lodged by Rama against Nilesh for slapping him in public,” PI Shailesh Narvekar said.
“Today at around 9.15 am when Rama was proceeding towards Vasco on his scooter, the accused stopped the victim on the road and stabbed him on the chest and arms and later ran away from the site. Soon after we received information, our team rushed to the house of accused and arrested him under Section 341 and 307 of IPC. Also though people are saying that the accused is mentally unsound and even possess lunatic certificate, however, I have not found him unsound during investigation. Only after medical examination we will come to know whether the accused is mentally unsound or not,” the PI said.
