BICHOLIM/panjim: Two-time former MLA of Mayem constituency and ex-speaker Anant Vishnu Shet (58) passed away due to a brief illness at Goa Medical and Hospital at Bambolim on Sunday.
According to family sources, he passed away at 3 am. He was admitted to GMC on July 31 after suffering from an intestinal problem due to acidity. The final rites were performed in the afternoon in a property situated behind his house.

His final rites were performed following a guard of honour as per the administrative protocol. He is survived by wife Anuradha, son Amarish, daughter Akshata and three brothers Kalidas, Premendra and Durgaram.
He first got elected as a panch of Mayem Panchayat in 1994. In 2005, he became the Zilla Panchayat member. In 2007, he got elected as MLA on the BJP ticket. He got elected in 2012 on BJP ticket and soon became the Deputy Speaker and later the Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly. He also fought for solving the custodian of evacuee property issue of Mayem village.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, Deputy CM Chandrakant Kavlekar, Science and Technology Minister Michael Lobo, Bicholim MLA and Speaker Rajesh Patnekar, Union Minister Shripad Naik, GTDC chairman and Mandrem MLA Dayanand Sopte, Aldona MLA Glenn Ticlo, former CM Laxmikant Parsekar, former speaker Rajendra Arlekar and others paid tributes.
Meanwhile, Governor Satya Pal Malik, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and other political leaders on Sunday condoled the death of former Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Anant Vishnu Shet.
In his condolence message, the Governor said, “I am extremely saddened to hear about the sad demise of former Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Anant Vishnu Shet. Shet was a respected public figure in Goa. He was very humble and polite in his demeanour. He devoted his entire life for the welfare of the people. He will be remembered in Goa for his penchant for social service.”
In his message, the Chief Minister said, “Shocked and deeply saddened by untimely demise of Anant Shet, a grass root leader and very humble and down to earth person. His contribution towards the State and service to people will always be remembered.”
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said, “Deeply shocked to learn about the untimely demise of Shet. His contribution towards the State of Goa will forever be treasured.”
Vijai Sardesai, GFP president said, “Deepest condolences to the family. We have fond memories of him being a tolerant Speaker.”
Congress president Girish Chodankar, said, “With death of Anant Shet, Goa has lost a simple, soft spoken and committed social figure.”
