Former US President Donald Trump has recently received a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize, following a recommendation by Republican congresswoman Claudia Tenney. Tenney highlighted Trump’s role in brokering the Abraham Accords, a series of historic agreements signed during his presidency aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab nations, including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Sudan. Tenney emphasized Trump’s contribution to facilitating these agreements, which she believes have been overlooked by the Nobel Peace Prize Committee.
The Abraham Accords, signed in September 2020, marked the first new peace agreement in the Middle East in nearly three decades. They sought to address longstanding tensions in the region by fostering diplomatic ties between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Tenney praised Trump’s leadership in challenging the conventional belief that peace in the Middle East was unattainable without resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
This nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is not the first for Trump. He has been previously nominated three times, citing his efforts in global conflict resolution and his approach to ending prolonged military engagements. Other individuals, including Norwegian Parliament member Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Laura Huhtasaari of the Swedish Finns Party, have also nominated Trump for the award in recognition of his initiatives to promote peace and dialogue.
The Abraham Accords signing ceremony, hosted by Trump at the White House in September 2020, was attended by key leaders from Israel and participating Arab states. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed optimism that these agreements would pave the way for broader peace in the region, potentially ending the longstanding Arab-Israeli conflict.
