‘Fortified’ not plastic rice distributed through Fair Price Shops: Officials

BICHOLIM: Contrary to rumours spread that the plastic rice is distributed through the ration cards, the Civil Supplies Department has clarified that it is ‘fortified’ and not plastic and has called on the public not to panic.

Inspector Suraj Shetye of the Civil Supplies Office also provided a comprehensive explanation. Contrary to the rumours, this rice is not plastic. It is known as “fortified rice,” a specially processed type of rice infused with essential vitamins, iron, calcium, and a variety of proteins, said Shetye.  This unique variety of rice has been introduced by the Government of India to ensure citizens have access to a more nutritious diet. In a typical bag of rice, 1% per kilogram is fortified, which amounts to 10 grams, informed Shetye.

In a bid to make people aware about the quality of rice supplied by the Civil Supplies Department, an awareness campaign was held at Shivajiraje Vidyalaya, followed by another camp at Van- Bicholim. Inspector Suraj Shetye from Bicholim Division, Dr Siddhi Kansar from the Maye Health Centre, Priyamvada Gaonkar, Sarpanch of Van Maulinge VP, and Tulsidas Chibde, Deputy Sarpanch, joined hands to address the community’s concerns through an informative session at the Sateri Devasthan Sabha Mandap.

Dr Siddhi Kansar emphasized the health benefits and importance of the rice distributed through ration cards. The attendees were informed about the incredible nutritional value this rice has to offer.

The Civil Supplies Department has earnestly appealed to the people for their cooperation in raising awareness about the true nature of this rice.
