Foundation stone for North Goa GTP on November 21

PANJIM: The foundation stone for the Rs 130-crore garbage treatment plant (GTP) at Saligao-Calangute plateau will be laid on November 21.

The work is expected to be completed within 24 months. The technology ZAK or Zentrale Abfallwirtschaft Kaiserslautern mixed waste treatment plant at Kaiserslautern in Southwest Germany is likely to be adopted for implementing the GTP.
The GTP is estimated to have a capacity of 100 tonnes and intended to handle garbage from the Bardez coastal belt. The plant has received consent to establish from Goa State Pollution Control Board and the acquired area is currently been notified as an industrial zone.
Saligao residents had raised strong objection to the proposed GTP and demanded its relocation, alleging that the proposed plant is in contempt of High Court order 2003, which had opposed the setting up of any waste treatment plant at the site. The villagers had even proposed an alternate site on the same plateau, 700 mtrs away from the proposed site above the Salmona hill.
