MAPUSA: Four persons were arrested on charges of culpable homicide after a middle-aged person they had assaulted succumbed to injuries at Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim last week. The men identified as Salim Sheikh, Javed Khan, Manueei Khan and Gauns Vepari have been remanded to nine days police custody. According to Mapusa police, the foursome have been charged with assaulting 45-year-old labourer Sanjay Chambe at Mapusa market that resulted in his death. Police initially registered a First Information Report under Section 324 of the Indian Penal Code for causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means, but converted the case to culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 of the IPC. “Vepari, owner of a biryani corner was angered that Chambe caused a nuisance along the passage leading to his shop. In his interrogation, he said that Chambe was drunk and slept near the passage,” an officer said. The alleged accused then splashed water on Chambe in an attempt to make him shift to another location. “The victim, in retaliation attacked him with a small knife causing a ‘superficial wound’ that is not serious in nature. The four persons including the shop owner then assaulted Chambe. He was rushed to hospital for treatment, but succumbed to his injuries,” the officer said. Mapusa police have converted the case to culpable homicide.
