MARGAO: Additional Director Ramesh Naik, vide a letter dated May 22 has asked the Chief Officer of Margao Municipal Council to act on the alleged fraud in the waste collection system adopted by the municipality and submit an action taken report by June 8.
The directive comes following a complaint lodged by former MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho through his shadow council, wherein he had alleged that the contractor Bapu Environmental Social Service Organisation was indulging in various irregularities and alleged that the council was attempting to siphon public funds.
Besides, he also complained that the agency was given the contract without having a council resolution to support it and also that the proper code procedures were not followed while awarding the contract.
Implying irregularities in the staff actually employed by the agency, Savio had asked the Director of Municipal Administration to check the workers’ list submitted by the contractor and get it certified by the supervisors and also to check whether it tallied with the worker’s register and the EPF records submitted by the contractor.
He argued that a comparison of the EPF records with the worker’s register would prove beyond a any doubt the irregularities being committed.
Taking cognizance of the complaint the Additional Director has now directed the Chief Officer to investigate the matter and submit an action taken report by June 8.
