PANJIM: More than 5,600 students from the mining affected areas of North Goa would be trained in different Information Technology (IT) related courses, free of cost, for upgradation of their skills.

The Directorate of Education has moved a proposal under the Goa District Mineral Foundation Fund (DMF) at an estimated cost of Rs 56 lakh. The students would be trained over a period of three years.

The Managing Committee of the North Goa District Mineral Funds headed by Collector Mamu Hage, during its recent meeting granted in-principal approval for the project.

Sources informed that the proposal is regarding providing free IT education through various courses in a bid to upgrade the IT skills of the students and citizens, overall, from the mining affected areas. The project will be implemented through Goa Info Tech Corporation Limited (ITG).

Sources said that Managing Committee of North Goa DMF, while granting in-principle approval has sought details from ITG with regards to requirement of knowledge centres.

The DMF project management unit is also directed to check whether the proposal fits within the DMF guidelines.

Iron ore mining activities in the State have come to standstill since March 2018. Before that in September 2012, the government had imposed ban on mining, which was extended by the Supreme Court till April 2014.

In yet another proposal, the Committee has also granted in-principle nod to the Directorate of Agriculture for its proposal with regards to skilling up of farmers from the mining belt in beekeeping to increase agriculture production and also provide supplementary income.

The project, to be implemented through the DMF, is estimated at Rs over 10 lakh. The Department said that the project will support the skilling exercise for identified farmer beekeepers from North Goa mining belt. Total 60 farmers would be trained.
