PANJIM: Senior journalist and freedom fighter Flaviano Dias passed today. Dias, who started with the Free Press Journal, was a long time bureau chief of Press Trust India in the late 1980s and 1990s as well as the editor of the weekly Goa Post.
He was also a member of the Goa Congress formed to push for Goa’s liberation from the Portuguese Rule and later a very strong force in the union movement.
The Goa Union of Journalists has condoled the death of Flaviano Dias. Recalling that he was a close associate of the late Peter Alvares, an avid fan of Goan Nationalist Dr Tristao Braganca e Cunha and a close friend of Socialist Leader Madhu Limaye, GUJ conveyed its deepest sympathy to his widow and other family members and shared in their grief.
As a journalist in the Free Press Journal he was closely associated with Goan & National Freedom fighters including the late George Vaz, Narayan Palekar, Gerald Pereira, Diwakar Kakodkar, Nath Pai Madhu Dandavate, Naguesh Karmali, and others.
Dias was also a former president of GUJ. The Communist Party of India (CPI) has also condoled his death calling him an unflinching crusader and a true patriot.
Until date Dias was one of the few freedom fighters who lived to tell an authentic tale to our young generations about the ‘agonies and ecstasies’ of the struggle of the Goan people for freedom from the Portuguese colonial rule, CPI eulogised calling him a genuine friend of the working-class. The Party conveyed its heartfelt condolences to his widow and family members.
