MARGAO: Beleaguered residents of a city-based housing society knocked the doors of Margao Municipal Council and made a fervent plea to the chief officer not to fall prey to the machinations of the builder.
Chief Officer Deepali Naik had earlier this week issued a notice for the society building for its demolition on ground of its weak structural liability. A group of residents from the society, however, petitioned to the chief officer not to go ahead with her plan till the builder agrees to abide the agreement entered into with them.
They pointed out that the builder had agreed to provide them 52 sq mts space for each of the flat owners, but lamented that the builder is now insisting on giving them space only admeasuring 39 sq mts. “If you go ahead with our eviction and demolition of the building, the civic body will only be playing into the hands of the builder,” former Margao municipal chairperson Savio Coutinho, who accompanied the residents submitted before the chief officer.
The chief officer, however, insisted that the civic body had no ulterior motive behind identifying the society building, saying the exercise was carried out based on instructions of the Director of Municipal Administration, Elvis Gomes.
She maintained that the residents are free to represent their case, adding that she would take an appropriate action on the matter after going through their arguments.
