PANJIM: The Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) on Sunday distributed face masks to the Panjim Police, with a request to distribute them to those found moving in the city without masks.
CCP Deputy Mayor Vasant Agshikar handed over 500 disposable face masks to Panjim Police Inspector Sudesh Naik at the police station.
Taking note of surge in COVID-19 infected cases, Agshikar said that large number of people particularly tourists are seen roaming in the city without wearing face masks.
He said that from Monday, the CCP staff will also join police in fining the violators, who will be then given a face mask so that he/she can then move in the city by wearing a mask.
Agshikar said that despite creating awareness campaign and warning the people, there was laxity in using masks as a result of which there was increase in transmission of virus.
“From Monday, the CCP staff will work with the police in the drive against those found moving without masks and once they are fined by the police, they will be given face masks for their use and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection,” he said.
The CCP deputy major said that the drive will be conducted at all important places like market areas, Church Square, Miramar Beach, bus stand and near the casinos.
PI Sudesh Naik said that the police are creating awareness campaigns at important places about the importance of wearing masks and to follow physical distancing norms. He said that people should take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection.
