Fuel prices slashed on Diwali eve

PANJIM: Following the decision of the central government to cut down fuel prices, the Goa government late Wednesday night too announced a Diwali gift to the people by reducing excise duty by Rs 7 each on petrol and diesel per litre. The Centre had slashed excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 per litre respectively earlier the same evening.

Announcing his decision on the eve of Diwali, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that the Goa government will also reduce an additional Rs 7 on petrol and Rs 7 on diesel thereby reducing the price of petrol by Rs 12 per litre and price of diesel by Rs 17 per litre. Petrol in Panjim on Wednesday was retailing at Rs 107.82 a litre while diesel was at Rs 104.11 a litre.

Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for slashing the excise duty on fuel, Sawant said that this decision will give relief to the common man and help control inflation.

Fuel rates across the country had reached their highest-ever levels in the past days.

The excise duty reduction is effective from November 4 when petrol price will come down from the current rate of Rs 110.04 a litre in Delhi to Rs 105.04. Diesel rate will be reduced from Rs 98.42 per litre to Rs 88.42.

“Government of India has taken a significant decision of reducing Central Excise Duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 10 (per litre) respectively from tomorrow. Prices of petrol and diesel will thus come down accordingly,” the finance ministry said in a statement.
