PERNEM: Miscreants set fire to fully grown sugarcane plantation at Casarwane causing loss worth few lakh of rupees to the farmer. Locals alleged that the plantation was purposely set fire.
According to sources, the incident occurred on Saturday. Immediately the Pernem Fire Station was informed however by the time the fire brigade could reach the spot, almost 70 per cent plantation was gutted. Along with sugarcane, farmers who had cultivated chilly and banana were also destroyed. Around 15 farmers have sustained loss.
Farmers claimed that even after having shortage of water, they managed to get water to grow this plantation and they were supposed to harvest the plantation after few weeks.
Farmers have requested the Agricultural Department to conduct panchanama and ascertain the loss and compensate for the same.
Farmers in this locality have been witnessing destruction of cashew, mango and now this sugarcane plantation for which the farmers have put in their years of hard work.
