MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday cracked a whip against furniture stalls, seizing furniture items displayed for sale despite the expiry of the fair period on Sunday.
Furniture worth over Rs two lakh was seized and transported to the Municipal building, with Chief Officer Deepali Naik declaring that the seized goods will be auctioned by the civic body.
Action against the furniture stalls came this evening as the owners continued to display their items along the Sessions Court-Ravindra Bhavan road. This, despite the fact the Municipal officials conveyed a message loud and clear to the hawkers and stall owners to dismantle the stalls by Tuesday noon. “Since we noticed that some of the furniture stalls defied our instructions to dismantle and stalls and transport the goods, our workers seized the furniture items”, informed the Chief Officer.
She said the seized goods will not be retuned back to the owners and will be auctioned to the highest bidder.
Meanwhile, the MMC has earned whopping revenue of Rs 17.65 lakh by way of license fees from the stalls erected during the seven-day feast fair at the Old market. Last year, the civic body had earned revenue to the tune of around Rs 14 lakh, sources said.
