MARGAO: There was commotion outside the Salcete sub-registrar office in Margao after citizens complained that ‘agents’ were allegedly trying to take advantage of them for processing their applications. The incident took place when a woman had gone to get a birth certificate at the Registrar office at the South Goa District Collectorate building.
The woman, who did not wish to be named, alleged that due to a delay cited at the Registrar office in getting her birth certificate, an agent had approached her outside the office and stated that for Rs 250, he would ‘do the needful’.
The woman raised the alarm and alleged that there was a nexus between the officials and such agents who roam near the offices. However, officials at the registrar office denied having any knowledge of this incident and reiterated that the processing of all applicants’
documents for various certificates like marriage and birth are done as per the procedure laid out.
The officials added that they strive their best to see that the certificates are given in time and any delays were attributed to the long queues of applicants on that particular day or week, if any.
Citizens who were present there, urged the Registrar to appoint a Public Relations Officer (PRO) who could assist applicants and explain to them the procedures and guide them to the respective official, which address such concerns and keep the touts at bay. Citizens also called for action against such agents and questioned how they are openly roaming around near the sub-registrar offices on a daily basis.
