GA flays govt for sticking to March 15 deadline

PANJIM: Stating that there are villagers who are ‘crying’ due to their concerns over the draft Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP), Roshan Mathias of Goencho Avaaz (GA) slammed the government for sticking to its March 15 deadline for submitting objections to the plan.

Now, with the deadline lapsed, Mathias called for an extension given that it is simply not possible for all villagers across the State to send in their objections.

Mathias said there are some villagers who are yet to fully understand the plan.

Mathias, who has been part of awareness programmes held in villages, pointed out that coastal residents are still calling them to hold more such public meetings. One such programme was held in Candolim and Sinquerim and Goencho Avaaz  submitted the written objections of these residents.

“We are completely shocked to see that the maps prepared for our village are grossly incorrect and fail to demarcate many of the natural and manmade features of our coastal lands and waters,” reads their letter.

Amongst their list of objections and suggestions, the residents pointed out that the high tide line, sand dunes, etc, are not marked correctly whereas a turtle nesting site, mudflats, rock outcrops, etc, are not shown in the map.
