Gammon India slammed for releasing sludge on Baina beach

Company official appears on site and assures remedial measures

VASCO: The residents, environmental and social activists from Vasco have slammed the officials Gammon India Pvt Ltd for letting out piling slurry on Baina beach.
According to the residents, to improve connectivity to Mormugao Port, the construction work of the elevated road from Gandhinagar to Tariwada by Gammon India Pvt Ltd is progressing on war footing. Thus during piling operations near Busy Bee School, Desterro Vasco, the piling contractor has been letting out piling slurry on the beach and this has been going on since past few days without any  fear of being questioned by the authorities concerned.
“On one hand the State government spent over Rs 2 crore for beautifying Baina beach and on the other we the contractor behaving in irresponsible manner by letting out piling slurry on the beach. This was not expected at all and we thus demand that the authorities concerned should take strong note of the ongoing defacement practice at the beach and should stop the menace on priority,” said Vasco based social activists Preetam Keluskar.
The leader of traditional fishermen Olencio Simoes and Vasco based environmental activists Advocate Savio J F Correia also condemned the company for releasing piling slurry on the beach.
When the issue was brought to the notice of Deputy Collector Mormugao Mahadev Araundekar, he assured to immediately issue directions to the officials Gammon India Pvt Ltd. In fact, the action was so quick that before Herald team could leave the place some officer from Gammon India Pvt Ltd appeared at the site and assured that the contractor would be asked to immediately dig up a pit for discharging piling slurry.
