Gandhi Market residents accuse Kamat of ignoring their plight

MARGAO: People living around the Gandhi Market have accused Margao MLA Digambar Kamat of ignoring their basic needs and rights. The residents complain of sewage mixed in tap water and problem of garbage and traffic.

The residents have joined hands with Adv Rajeev Gomes and have given MMC and MLA a 7-day ultimatum to solve their problems failing to which around 200 families will demonstrate at MMC and the MLA’s house.
More than 50 people assembled on Tuesday to voice their worries. The children in the area are reportedly falling sick due to polluted water and have contracted water borne diseases due to the unmanaged rain water. “We have now realised we have been played around by the local MLA for more than 13 years,” said Riyaz Shaikh, President of Gandhi Market Residents Association.
“Kamat and MMC have supposedly spent Rs 15 lakh on de-silting and cleaning drains in the area. Nothing is seen the drains choke as in the past,” said Adv Gomes. Priya Borkar a housewife from the area said, “Our children are falling ill due to drinking of tap water.” The residential area around Gandhi Market has more than 100 houses.
