MARGAO: Demanding that the burning of garbage inside the compound of a warehouse be stopped immediately, the residents of Pateapur, Nuvem on Monday gathered at the site where garbage was being burnt and later doused the fire.
It is pertinent to note that the burning and dumping of garbage in villages and even the town areas continues despite the Supreme Court strictures against the burning of garbage.
The locals contacted the panch and Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa and claimed that this burning of garbage will permanently destroy their wellbeing. The MLA later contacted the police, sarpanch and deputy sarpanch.
Cruz Ferrao, a local said, “The smoke was so bad that I couldn’t have my dinner,”.
Warehouse manager Pratap Satardekar came to the spot and faced the wrath of the people.
In his defence, he said that they never burn their garbage to which people said such things are done on a regular basis. The Manager later assured the locals to put an end to the practice.
“Burning of garbage is illegal. Nuvem has a garbage collection system and all have to hand over their garbage to the collector. These kinds of acts will not be tolerated in the future”, the MLA warned.
