MARGAO: Agitated residents of Majorda resorted to a novel mode of protest when they collected litter scattered outside a waste collecting station and dumped the same in front of the Majorda-Utorda-Calata Panchayat ghar on Monday.
The incident has brought to the fore the waste problem facing the village and the failure of the Panchayat body to address the burning problem.
What prompted the residents to take the drastic steps was the fact that the Panchayat did not move in to clear the waste outside the collection centre despite bringing to the notice of Sarpanch Moises Vaz over a week ago.
Left with no option, with foul odour emanating from the waste collection station, the residents lifted the waste and dumped the same in front of the panchayat.
Colva police rushed to the Panchayat after receiving information about the incident, but the villagers blamed the Sarpanch for the state of affairs.
A resident Arminda Fernandes said the installation of the waste collection unit in a residential locality had been creating nuisance to the resident staying in the vicinity, but the Panchayat did nothing to redress their grievances.
“The residents had personally brought the matter to the notice of the Sarpanch over a week ago.
The entire area is stinking with foul odour. The smell is unbearable”, she said.
Another resident Orlando Vaz echoed similar sentiments while demanding action by the Panchayat body.
A UK national Viviana told the media that installing a waste collection centre in a residential locality is not just an eye sore but a health hazard as well.
