MARGAO: The New Market and Gandhi Market vendors on Monday met the Margo Municipal Council chairperson to register their protest against garbage fee hike which they termed as unaffordable.
The garbage fees for the commercial establishments in Margao have seen a quantum jump recently. The shops, which earlier paid Rs 1800 as garbage collection fees, have alleged that it has been hiked to Rs 6,000. The president of the Market Vendors’ Association Vinod Shirodkar asked the MMC to fix the fees at Rs 600 only.
“Besides the fruit, flower and vegetable sellers, the other market vendors do not generate any major garbage and levying them with Rs 6,000 is ruthless and we oppose it,” said Shirodkar.
The chairperson while speaking to the vendors promised to keep the fees under Rs 1,800. However, the chairperson informed them that she will be able to do so only after holding a council meeting and with a proper discussion on the same.
