Garbage, house tax issues debated at Sao Mathias gram sabha

PANJIM: The gram sabha of Sao Mathias Village panchayat on Sunday discussed the issues of garbage and house tax.

The panchayat has proposed to implement the collection of garbage tax from April 2024 while it wants to appoint an agency for collection of house tax. The members pointed out that there is already an outstanding amount of Rs four lakh to be collected from the people. Out of Rs four lakh, Rs 2.5 lakh is the house tax while Rs 1.5 lakh is the professional tax.

A villager suggested the gram sabha to first collect the outstanding taxes then propose to hike it. It was also suggested to have transparency when the taxes are to be hiked.

“Put everything, whatever has been done and what is proposed to be done in the future in the newspapers. There must be transparency,” the villager said.

The annual budget was presented, read out before the gram sabha and later approved. The gram sabha also discussed the issue of Talathi, who has been transferred and the current Talathi is holding additional charge. The meeting demanded that a full-time Talathi be appointed in the village panchayat.
