VASCO: Mormugao municipality appears not serious in tackling the garbage issue, as solid and mixed waste keep piling at many places in the town.
Some locals and an NGO have written to the municipality requesting it to clear the garbage soon. But the work of clearing the garbage is moving at a snail’s pace.
On Tuesday, some locals had come to meet newly elected Mormugao Chairperson Nandadeep Raut. They spoke about the sorry state of affairs near a private school at Baina where wet garbage is being dumped in the open.
It may be recalled that Mormugao chief officer had assured to act against garbage dumping in open, but it has just remained lip service.
After locals explained about the gravity of the issue, Chairperson Raut immediately instructed the municipal staff to clear the garbage.
Later when inquired about the steps he has taken on this issue, Raut informed that he instructed his municipal staff and along with them inspected the site and directed municipal staff to get the area cleaned and place garbage bins if necessary.
Recently an NGO wrote to the chief officer and health officer that garbage dumping in open was taking place near a private school at Desterro wado. The NGO had warned the children may face various dangers and health related issues due to dumping of garbage near the school.
