Garbage piles up in Vasco as earthmovers break down

Municipality pays Rs 15,000 per day for hired machinery

VASCO: Breakdown of the earth movers machinery of Mormugao municipality has led to the pilling of mixed waste in the municipal area once again. Locals and social workers request the authorities to take cognisance of the issue before the situation worsens.

Mormugao Municipal Council Chief Officer Sandhya Kamat, however, claimed there is little space to dump collected waste but it needs to be pushed ahead so that additional space is made to dump the waste.

Chief Officer Sandhya Kamat also said that the earth mover machinery which was with municipality turned faulty. 

“The one, which municipality hires, the Council has to pay rent of Rs 15,000 per day. The proposal to purchase new machinery has been sent to the government and we are waiting for the approval,” said Kamat.

Speaking on garbage treatment the Chief Officer said: “There are two biodegradable plants which will be operational by May this year and then the wet waste will be treated there.”

New Vaddem-based social worker Vinod Kinlekar (Pandey) has urged authorities to look into the matter of garbage management in municipal area. 

Speaking to reporters Pandey said “there are religious structures in municipal area and garbage getting piled up in its proximity is absolutely not in good taste.”
