MARGAO: The issue of monthly garbage tax took centrestage at Camorlim’s gram sabha, on Sunday with the villagers questioning the rationale behind this proposal.
Chaired by Sarpanch Basil Fernandes, the session saw the villagers quizzing the reasoning behind the proposed monthly garbage tax of Rs 60 per household. The gram sabha members highlighted that while the annual house tax stands at Rs 60, the garbage fee would accumulate to Rs 720 annually, raising concerns about its justification.
In response, Sarpanch Fernandes explained that the responsibility for waste management has been delegated to local bodies by the State government. He stressed that without implementing the garbage fees, the panchayat would struggle to manage waste effectively, as there is insufficient government funding for this purpose.
Fernandes further elaborated that the Camorlim panchayat has initiated both dry and wet waste collection services, which require personnel, vehicles, and their upkeep.
“The success of our garbage management project hinges on community support and the payment of these fees,” he said.
Following extensive deliberations, the meeting concluded with a decision to reduce the monthly garbage collection fee to Rs 50 instead of Rs 60.
The meeting also addressed the issue of drainage and gutter cleaning. Members urged the sarpanch to ensure that the PWD clears the drains and gutters along the main roads. Additionally, the gram sabha members requested information on the number of trees felled and branches trimmed as part of the village’s monsoon preparations.
The sarpanch presented the administrative and audit reports for discussion and approval.
