Garbage treatment plant at Saligao satisfactory: GSPCB

PANJIM: The functioning of the State-of-the-art
ultra-modern Garbage treatment plant at Saligao has been found satisfactory and
within the consent parameters by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).

The Board, which conducted the monitoring of
the effluent treatment plant of the Solid Waste Management Facility (SWM),
operated by the Hindustan Waste Treatment Pvt Ltd, has observed that the
consent parameters are been complied with the prescribed standard limit and the
food-to-microorganism
(F/Mratio is low due
to less quantity of waste water generation from the facility.

The observations are revealed in the Board’s annual report
2016-17 released on Monday.

“The analysis reports indicate that the final treated
effluent is meeting the standards laid down in the consent to operate order,”
the report stated.

“The waste water generated from the industry is treated in
well designated effluent treatment plant,” it added further.

Commissioned on May 30- Statehood Day in 2016- the solid waste
treatment plant (SWTP) using foreign technical knowhow- has since its inception
processed around 40,000-50,000 tones of the waste, while also produced
electricity which is supplied to the grid besides being used for captive
purpose.

The Board in its series of recommendations has asked the
operator to install Online monitoring system to monitor the relevant parameters
for effluent treatment plant and to maintain records of the sludge generated
and disposed.

GSPCB has also said that tree plantation should be continued
during monsoon period within the premises in order to develop green belt in the
surrounding areas.
