PANJIM: The Goa Association of Resident Doctors (GARD) has reiterated its demand for immediate revocation of suspension of senior resident doctor, attached to Radiology department of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), pending inquiry.
The senior resident doctor is placed under suspension for alleged negligence in handling former MLA late Jitendra Deshprabhu’s case.
“We firmly stand in solidarity with our colleague and ask for revocation of suspension until the inquiry is complete. We request for an impartial, timely and transparent inquiry be conducted in the sequence of events on April 21 right from patient arrival to GMC and not just delay in the CT scan, as is being repeatedly, alleged,” Goa Association of Resident Doctors said in statement issued.
Deshprabhu, 63, died last month due to pneumonia. The Congress had raised serious doubts over mysterious death of its firebrand leader. Based on the initial inquiry findings, Goa Medical College and Hospital suspended the senior doctor, after she was found missing from duty, when the patient was brought for CT scan.
GARD in its press statement has tried to bring to light the actual sequence of events on the day, Deshprabhu was brought to the hospital.
GARD claims that the patent was referred to Goa Medical College and Hospital with history of cough, fever and breathlessness from a private hospital. “Patient was taken to isolation ward 113 according to our institutional SOP during the current pandemic. However, the patient relative refused admission in the said ward, raising serious medical concern. The patient was then shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital casualty, the reasons for which are under inquiry,” the association said.
GARD said the patient’s condition worsened on the way to casualty and as the need at that time was for urgent resuscitation and intubation for stabilisation and not CT scan. Also, the previous chest X-ray, which was produced, showed bilateral pneumonia.
“The junior resident doctors of radiology were available throughout this time in their duty room and were not informed about the case personally or telephonically. Also the said resident doctor reached the scan room within 10 minutes of intimation,” the GARD said.
They claim that the patient, who was later shifted to isolation ward, was promptly incubated and connected to ventilator.
