CORTALIM: In a decision which could invite criticism from the greens, the Sancoale Panchayat has decided to come up with a complex on the panchayat garden next to the Shantadurga temple.
Informing the gram sabha on Sunday, Sarpanch Ramakant Borkar told the handful of villagers present that the Rs 80 lakh complex would consist of four shops, gymnasium, library and joggers track which would be funded by the government.
What has raised eyebrows is the fact that a new panchayat ghar complex which has been proposed and which is to be taken up according to sarpanch, could have taken care of all these facilities and saved the lone garden for the villagers which also could be developed with the help of the government.
The sarpanch also informed that a Bailing machine to process the plastic waste would be set up and an agency from Curchorem would collect the plastic waste.
When it was brought to the notice of the sarpanch as to why the Blessed Joseph Vaz Sanctuary which despite being an historical place and patronised by tourists from around the world, was excluded from the designated spots for weekly plastic collection, the sarpanch directed the secretary to include it as a designated spot for plastic waste collection.
The Sarpanch also informed that he would hold a meeting with electricity officials to improve the chaotic power situation in the village.
On the gram sabha timings which is fixed early at 9 am, the sarpanch said that it was the demand of the villagers to hold the meet early. When asked what was the timing to hold the gram sabha as per the Panchayat Raj Act, the secretary Sandhya Shet Shirdokar informed that there were no fixed timings and it could start during the office time at 9 am although the panchayat begins work not before 10 am.
However, as the gram sabha got over before 10 am, some villagers including activist Lawrence Fernandes were seen making it to the panchayat and were surprised to know that the gram sabha had concluded.
However, it is learnt that no proposals were received by the panchayat.
Other than the sarpanch, only Deputy Sarpanch Shilpa Naik was present at the gram sabha. Rashmi Bhandari was the BDO observer.
