PORVORIM: Minister for Environment Alina Saldanha stated that gardens bring together people of diverse background and enable them to interact on social, political and personal issues.
She was speaking after inaugurating the garden developed by the Forest Department at Pundalik Nagar, Porvorim.
Speaking further, Saldanha said, “It also provides a place for the senior citizens to relax, enjoy and breathe fresh air and the children to play safely.”
Saldanha further said the exposure to green space reduces stress and increases a sense of wellness and belonging. She urged the residents to maintain cleanliness and take care of the garden. “If gardens are maintained properly, they will last for generations,” she added.
Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte stated that the maintenance of gardens is very important and it is the responsibility of every individual to take care of gardens.
“I have taken steps to improve the infrastructure in Porvorim. What is required is financial support from the government. Sewage and garbage are the two main issues that haunt the panchayat,” he said.
“The panchayat has already started door-to-door collection of garbage. It is up to the State government to set up sewerage treatment plant in Porvorim,” said Khaunte.
Principal Conservator of Forests Richard D’Souza stated that the Forest Department has spent about Rs 16 lakh to develop the garden.
