Garlic prices skyrocket in Ponda

PONDA: The shortage of garlic has led to the prices skyrocketing in Goa and having an adverse effects on eateries, hotels and Chinese joints particularly in Ponda and the State as well. Consumers and vendors have felt the pinch too as they grapple with the highly priced commodity. 

While garlic prices have surged all over, it is being sold at  Rs 350 per kg at the horticulture outlets in Ponda while in other places, it is priced from Rs 400 onwards depending on the size.

Prasad Naik, a vendor at the horticulture outlet said that the garlic prices have been soaring for almost two months as the commodity is in short supply,

Naik says that earlier garlic was sold at Rs 120 to 150 per kg but suddenly due to shortage, the prices have shot up astronomically and added that over the last few days it was sold at Rs 400 per kg but now gradually the rates have come down to Rs 350 per kg.

The Vendors here stated that the climatic condition during the last last few months had hit garlic production in country.

|Vendors feared that garlic prices may cross Rs 500 per kg if the shortage continues however that with fresh harvest is expected soon, the garlic prices will normalise..
