CANACONA: A garment shop located in a commercial complex at Chaudi in Canacona was gutted in the wee hours of Sunday. The shop owner Phularam Modi estimated that property worth Rs 4 lakh got destroyed in the fire.
Sources at Canacona fire station said that they had to rush to attend a fire call at 5.30 am on Sunday. It took them more than an hour to douse the fire, the said.
Sources also added that most of the readymade garments were lost in the fire; it is suspected that the fire must have originated from a burning oil lamp at the altar in the cloth shop.
In another incident a massive banyan tree got uprooted and fell on the internal road leading to Davalkhazan from St Anne’s Church at Agonda.
It took nearly 7 hours for the fire fighting crew to cut and remove the tree from the road, fire fighters said. Fortunately the tree fell in an open space.
