PANJIM: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on Saturday welcomed the reduction in municipal tax rates announced by the City Corporation of Panaji (CCP) bringing a uniform rate for all commercial establishments irrespective of the zoning factor. It may be noted that the CCP had increased the rates in 2016.
In a press statement issued, GCCI Director General Sanjay Amonkar said that the GCCI has been following up with the CCP as the rates notified in 2016 with no scientific basis of calculation.
A committee was formed under Manoj M Caculo consisting of Sanjeev Kamat, Milind Shankhwalkar and Siddha Sardesai to study the matter in detail considering the revenue collection and financials of the CCP and had recommended uniform rates for all commercial establishments doing away with zoning and other factors.
The GCCI has urged the CCP to take up on war footing a collection drive for recovery of house tax. It recommended that incentives can be given to defaulters by way of waiver of interests/penalty and grant of installment payment over three to four months.
The GCCI said that there has to be proper mechanism of identifying defaulters and to adopt of punitive measures like non-renewal of trade licence.
