VASCO: The Logistic Committee of the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has sought the intervention of new Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) chairman I Jeyakumar to resolve the issues of GCCI as well as port users.
LC chairman Chandrakant Gawas informed that the GCCI had submitted a memorandum to MPT informing about and requesting solutions to various issues, including the pending work of the four-lane highway project connecting Verna to MPT and parking for heavy vehicles.
“Connectivity to the port is major issue. Additionally, heavy vehicles are parked along the Dabolim airport road from Chicalim junction, creating a lot of traffic congestion and accidents. Therefore, we have requested the MPT to use the land that it has bought at Alto-Dabolim to create pay parking facilities for heavy vehicles to ease traffic congestion and minimize road accidents,” said Gawas.
He added, “Even the doubling of the railway track from Tinai Ghat to Vasco is a need of the hour. MPT should not concentrate only on iron ore, but should also handle coal, pharmaceutical products and other commodities to generate revenue.”
The issue of boat wreckages in the port approach channel and Vasco bay has also been raised with the MPT chairman.
Gawas stated, “The wreckage issue is very serious considering that there have been many incidents where loaded barges and fishing vessels struck the wreckages. It is important that MPT remove the hurdles for the smooth movement of barges and other vessels.”
