PANJIM: The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) Logistics Committee submitted a representation to the newly appointed Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) Chairman Rajiv Jalota and requested him not to discontinue the container line feeder services at MPT as it will affect the logistics service providers and affect the livelihood of 15,000 families.
The container line feeder service at the MPT will be discontinued with effect from August 3.
In the representation, the GCCI Logistics Committee Chairman Chandrakant Gawas said that discontinuation of container line feeder services at the MPT started in 1992 will affect the logistics service providers such as Custom brokers, freight forwarders, transporters, cargo handlers, stevedores, warehouses etc to whom the container line feeder services is the genesis for the continuity of their business. It will also directly affect 15,000 families in the State.
“The Customs Department in Goa will lose a major portion of their revenue arising from Custom duty on imports which is annually more than Rs 1,300 crore,” he stated.
MPT Chairman Rajiv Jalota assured the delegation that he will study the matter and give consideration to the representation factoring dependents such as Custom brokers, freight forwarders, transporters, cargo handlers, stevedores etc which will not affect the revenue of the MPT and other departments.
A copy of the representation has also been forwarded to the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shripad Naik.
Besides Gawas, the other members of the delegation were GCCI Logistics Committee Co-chairman Dhirendra Thakker (Mannubhai) and members Santosh Parab, Sudhir Manerkar and Mayur Negandhi.
